You are dedicated to your craft. You have spent countless hours honing your skills. You have a boundless curiosity for the underlying theories and structure of communicating ideas. You are the artist who finds the connections between your medium and other communications media. You are the artist who relishes in a setback; after all, it's a new opportunity to learn and grow. Inspiration is more than a haphazard mode of thought requiring constant nurturing: it is your natural state of mind.

Lean Into Art is where you go when you're ready to push yourself as an artist in new ways. As a place to learn communication arts online it combines an art-journaling approach, the best of live and time-shifted classes, and a recognition system that encourages students to finish projects, give feedback, even participate in teaching.

It's a big art challenge - that's why we put the enticing warning in the name. You have to lean into it.

LIA Cast 26 - Thinking About Design, Pt 3

Concluding our Thinking About Design series, we discuss some of the elements of design and how they can be used to convey whatever meaning you wish. Using advanced paneling in comics as a way to model these elements in use, we explore how a thoughtful application of these design elements can create stunning and original works.

We close with some strategies we've used to "level up" on our own design skills.

LIA Cast 25 - Buying the Couch Before You Move

We've often advocated just diving in and making small projects, like mini-comics, to engage with the creative arts and level up a bit. But once you've done that leveling up, how do you manage ambitious or long-term projects?

This time we talk about navigating the Jenga tower of big projects. When do you know the project is ready? How "finished" should the website be before you announce the project? Once underway, how do you know that each piece of the project is complete?

Polytechnicast - A One-Off Solution

Polytechnicast_-_a_one-off_solution_cover_art

In this episode of the Polytechnicast I share an overiew of the technical details of my move from Google App Engine to Squarespace. It’s a bit about RSS, XML, why text formats rock and how web browsers are a fantastic place to build a little one-use data transformation.

LIA Cast 24 - Thinking About Design, Pt 2

Thinking-about-design-pt-2

In the second episode of Lean Into Art's Thinking About Design series, Rob and Jerzy take a stroll around the Quadrants of Forces that inform the design of a project (Personal Opinion, Design Principles, Heuristics, and Fashion).

What follows is a discussion about the different inflections of these forces in regards to whether the design is being executed as a service or as a vehicle for self-expression. Also, how do these forces balance or counter-balance when working with a group? Rob and Jerzy use some of their personal experiences to investigate how to negotiate between these forces to design a project that satisfies the needs of the intended audience.
