You are dedicated to your craft. You have spent countless hours honing your skills. You have a boundless curiosity for the underlying theories and structure of communicating ideas. You are the artist who finds the connections between your medium and other communications media. You are the artist who relishes in a setback; after all, it's a new opportunity to learn and grow. Inspiration is more than a haphazard mode of thought requiring constant nurturing: it is your natural state of mind.

Lean Into Art is where you go when you're ready to push yourself as an artist in new ways. As a place to learn communication arts online it combines an art-journaling approach, the best of live and time-shifted classes, and a recognition system that encourages students to finish projects, give feedback, even participate in teaching.

It's a big art challenge - that's why we put the enticing warning in the name. You have to lean into it.

In this audio+video episode of the Polytechnicast I’m joined by special guest Javen Ackerman, creator of the comics The Winchcombe and Q Burger! In recent years, Javen has made Adobe Illustrator the main tool he uses to produce comics. We chat about his process and in the video you'll see him demonstrate his techniques and get a glimpse of how he takes full advantage of Adobe Illustrator to work quickly and efficiently.

LIA Cast 16 - Cheating

Lia-16-demo-2

In this audio/video episode of the Lean Into Art Cast, we dive into some of our favorite methods to find quick inroads to visual storytelling, or what some others might call "cheats". But we like to think of them as simple means to explore an idea and to remind ourselves that we shouldn't let ourselves become slaves to craft or process. Craft is important, but only when leveraged as needed.

For more storytelling strategies this, check out the workshops we now have for sale in the Lean Into Art store! There you will find a ton of workshops on character design, storytelling, illustration, and more.

LIA Cast 15 - Me Party

In this audio-only episode of the LIA Cast, Jerzy and Rob talk about how good work is often sandwiched between periods of what some creative types consider to be less desirable, and how one might deal with that.

But the bulk of the discussion concerns itself with rites of passage and taking the opportunity upon finishing a project to celebrate. Celebrations can be more than self-congratulatory back slapping; they can offer opportunities to take stock in what a creator has achieved and define the project's learning experiences to bring to the next projects.

We also roll out our new Lean Into Art workshop store, where you can purchase time-shifted editions of all of the content created through our past 30 Classes in 30 Days event! A great last-minute gift idea this holiday season.

Polytechnicast_-_keep_moving_-_album_art

In this episode of the Polytechnicast is more art-journal than art-thesis. I share how I’m feeling good-yet-still-recovering from 30 classes in 30 days, some reflections on 30 Classes, and other November-timed art challenges.

LIA Cast 14 - Men of Letters

Thdsh

It's a hands-on episode as Rob and Jerzy demo some of their favorite illustration and lettering techniques in Adobe Illustrator. While we did our best to describe what we were doing for the audio listeners, this episode might be best enjoyed in the video format.

We also spend a little bit of time talking about community building and how blogs, podcasts, and vid casts can all be tools to help one find inroads to starting an art "scene" in their area.

Topics: Sound Design, Logo Design, Lettering, Illustration
